Nuyorican Soul - Runaway

Masters At Work is the house-music production and remix team of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzales. They first worked together using the name, which had been given to them by mutual friend Todd Terry (who recorded several tracks under that name in the 1980s), in 1990.

The duo has also produced music together under the names MAW, KenLou, Sole Fusion, and Nuyorican Soul.

Their Nuyorican Soul project had the duo working extensively with real (as opposed to sampled or synthesized) musicians, in a variety of styles including Latin, disco, jazz, and more. Musicians who took part in this project include Vincent Montana Jr., Roy Ayers, George Benson, Jocelyn Brown, Tito Puente, and members of the Salsoul Orchestra. The self-titled album released under the name Nuyorican Soul in 1996 included original tracks as well as cover versions of songs by the performers with which the duo was working, such as "Sweet Tears" (Roy Ayers), and "Runaway," originally sung by Loleatta Holloway with the Salsoul Orchestra, here sung by India and featuring musicians from the original recording of 1977.

MAW has a history as remixers, having reproduced tracks for various acts both inside and outside the world of dance music. Some of the artists remixed by the two producers include Madonna, Donna Summer, Jody Watley, Janet Jackson, Jamiroquai, Earth Wind & Fire, and Stephanie Mills

India- Breaking Night

India —better known as La India in the latin music industry— was born 9 March 1970 as Linda Viera Caballero in Río Piedras, Puerto Rica, but raised in the Bronx, New York City, USA.

Worked as backing vocalist on latin-freestyle artists TKA's track "Come Get My Love" (1986), even featuring on its back cover, when she was 14. Then under the tutelage of producer John "Jellybean" Benitez on a couple of tracks including her track "Dancing On The Fire" (1988) (with co-producer Louie Vega who she had been introduced to in her mid-teens, and would later go on to marry in 1990, though divorce in 1996).

Signing briefly for Reprise Records, who supposedly planned on making her the Latin version of Madonna —Jellbean's other main find earlier in his career— where both Jellybean and Louie Vega produced her album "Breaking Night" (1990).

However, it wasn't until her major involvment in the music business working with Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez on various projects mainly in the mid-1990's whilst in her twenties, for which she acheived great success. The three tracks of note during this time were as Masters At Work with "I Can't Get No Sleep" (1993), and "To Be In Love" (1997), along with their Nuyorican Soul project track "Runaway" (1997).

Alongside work on latin-house music into the early 2000's, she also became more involved in the more purist latin arena around the late 1990's, and infact on these projects the name La India was generally used.

Whilst moving her career and concentratation into latin music, she built quite a reputation as 'The Princess Of Salsa' garnering three Grammy Award and two Latin Grammy Award nominations. She has collaborated with her godmother Celia Cruz, and many other artists like Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan and even Tito Puente, releasing several albums of her own.

M.A.W. Ft.La India Con La Voe-Viva Puerto Rico

Kenny Dope and Lil Louie Vega AKA Masters At Work (M.A.W.). Nuff said right?? I remember going to the record store in Sunset Park where Kenny Dope used to DJ, once in a blue...
Lil Louie Vegas uncle is the one and only Salsa singer Hector Lavoe, which this track uses one of his intro as a sample intro of their own. There is also a sample of Indias Get Out Of My Head track off of Tito Puentes album called Jazzin'. This 12 inch has one of those nice clean and tight basslines and with Indias vocals, you could never go wrong. Oh, we can't forget the work of Albert Cabrera from the Latin Rascals on the Rascal Dubb...
Enjoy, Rob.
