DJ AM Dies

Some hard to believe news just came up the man that survived a plane crash last year in September of 2008 was found dead today at his apartment in NYC. I didn't follow DJ AM Much but the guy had some creative skills...how sad when a good talent goes so early. Here's the story from the NY POST.

DJ AM -- the celebrity club disc jockey known for dating starlets, collecting hundreds of sneakers and surviving a horrific plane crash -- was found dead an apparent overdose in his SoHo apartment today, police said.

Cops found prescription drug bottles inside DJ AM's residence at 210 Lafayette St. after the 36-year-old's lifeless body spotted face-down in his bed at around 5:23 p.m. by a friend, who was concerned he hadn't heard from the performer in several days, sources said.

Emergency medical workers responding to a 911 call from the friend declared DJ AM dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected.

DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, had twittered recently that he had finished wrapping up an MTV reality show about drug addiction.

Prescription drugs and a crack pipe were found at the scene. Bottles of pills were found in both the bedroom and the kitchen. He was wearing sweatpants and no shirt.

Friends of the disc jockey gathered outside his apartment tonight, hugging each other. They declined to speak with reporters.

The Philadelphia native, whose real name was Adam Michael Goldstein, was a former member of the band Crazy Town, which scored the smash rap-rock hit "Butterfly" in 2001.

His work behind turntables in hotspots around the world paid him up to $25,000 or more per night -- helping fund what became a collection of more than 1,000 sneakers.

DJ AM had high-profile romances with Nicole Richie, to whom he was once engaged, as well as with actress Mandy Moore.

Last September 19, DJ AM and former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker were badly burned in the crash of a private plane in South Carolina that killed four other people on-board. The plane crashed as it headed down the runway during takeoff.

Barker's ex-wife, Playmate Shanna Moakler, responded to news of DJ AM's death on Twitter, writing, "My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends."

"We all love him and miss him," said DJ AM's close friend, new York nightclub entrepreneur Mike Satsky.

Samathan Ronson, another celebrity DJ, tweeted to a friend, "Waiting for someone to say this isn't true."

Guitar virtuoso John Mayer tweeted, "We're supposed to lose our friends to time, at an age when we're ready to agree to the terms of having lived a long life. Not now."

Lindsay Lohan wrote, "i can't believe this ... I'm in shock. why? why? r.i.p. adam."

In his own last post on Twitter, dated Tuesday, DJ AM quoted a Grandmaster Flash song: "New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems."

He was scheduled to have deejayed at Dusk in Atlantic City on Tuesday and then tonight at Rain in Las Vegas.

In a 2007 interview with the New York Times, DJ AM admitted to having begun seriously abusing crack cocaine in his early 20s. But he said he had been sober for the past nine years and had even recently given up smoking.

"All that's left is caffeine," he told the paper.

Justin Hoffman, a Las Vegas resident who was a friend of the performer, broke down into to tears as he told The Post how DJ AM "reached out to me four years ago, saved my life. I was dying, I was suicidal, and was down to maybe 130 pounds."

"He reached out to me, talked to me for hours," Hoffman said. "He'd be there every single time I would call. He would be there no matter situation, he would answer calls at 5:30 in the morning. He just want to help people out."

Baron Lopez - Baron Lopez Mix

I decided to post a mini mix by this legendary NY DJ Baron Lopez! I believe he's one of the first to do remixes for Salsa Songs...This man has skills DJing I have seen him live at a club I use to go to and he just knows how to put it on! Here's the Bio of Him and don't forget to download this mix if you don't have it.

Baron Lopez, born in the South Bronx of New York a/k/a “Condado de La Salsa” on September 2nd, quite a few years ago. Born the third child of Buenaventura Olivo and the third child of Pedro Lopez Arroyo, Baron was destined for glory.

Baron developed a love for music at an early age - according to most people around the age of five. However, his passion for music deepened while viewing DJs such as “DJ Hollywood”, “Grand Master Flash”, “Charlie Chase” and “Kool Herc” in festivals all over the city during the ‘70s.
He began his career as a Hip Hop DJ cutting up records like “Jam on the Groove” by Ralph McDonald and “Take me to the Mardi Gras” by Bob James, while at the same time, buying Disco Music. Baron was the DJ at parties being held at “The Hunts Point Palace” and “St. Athanasius” in the Bronx and this helped build his name in the industry. This took him to other levels while meeting artists, producers, A&R of Record Labels which would later request his talents for upcoming projects.
In 1981, Baron landed his first steady job as the DJ at “The Skating Palace” in the Bronx. He began listening to KISS FM and “DJ Shep Pettibone” whom inspired Baron through his remixing techniques on the radio to obtain the knowledge on remixing.
The following year, he goes to the first and only club in NYC “Bonds International”.
In 1983, he emerges in Puerto Rico due to personal issues that need to be resolved. During this time, Baron decides to scout the clubs and see how advanced the DJs and the music really are. To his amazement, because of the knowledge he had acquired in New York on remixing, he was easily accepted and recognized immediately. Considering all his talent and his natural flow, it was difficult to enter the industry. Baron took a detour and became a lightman at a club called “Hollywood Disco” which only enhanced his hunger to become the club’s DJ.
The day came, when there was a DJ contest at “Hollywood Disco”. Ironically, Baron is not a competitive person, but his friends and peers fully knowing his talents, convinced him to enter the contest. Upon discovery by the judges’ of Baron’s employment at the club, and adamantly not wanting to disqualify him, they choose to select him as second. It was clear that the judges’ curiosity and respect were piqued by Baron’s talent. When Baron came up to the turntables and started remixing, the judges’ stood up to see if he was mixing live or if it was a remixed record. Thus, began Baron’s legendary career in Puerto Rico as one of the most innovative and creative DJ’s in the industry.
Baron Lopez’ recognition in Puerto Rico grew to legendary proportion. He worked the entire island’s top clubs including “Camelot”, “Disco Patin”, “Lazer’s”, “Hollywood in Bayamon”, “Babalou’s” (where the Dupont Plaza burned down), “Amadeus”, “Flamingo Road”, “Peggy Sue”, “Egypto” and “Bellini’s”.
The Remixer

In 1986, Baron’s knowledge on remixing now opens the doors to radio stations. He went to many radio stations in Puerto Rico with no success. Then he went to X100, which was listed 15, 16 or 12 in the radio books even after considering that they were playing top 40s. While at X100, he pitched his idea to the President, Roberto Davila, and the Programming Director, Nestor Perez, to do exclusive remixes for their radio station in regular rotation and they embraced the idea. Baron was given the opportunity to remix dance, free-style, Salsa and Merengue. Six months later, the radio station moves up to 5 on the charts. Baron’s work was so impressive that Cosmo 94, the 1 station on the western region asked him to come on board. This made Baron the only DJ to simultaneously work in the island’s top two stations. After three years with both stations, he went to work at KQ 105, playing an integral role in making the station 1.

My mentors for editing for the radio stations were “The Latin Rascals” and my master & brother “Jose ‘Chep’ Nunez”

In the summer of 1987, X100 ties with KQ 105 for the 1 spot on the charts, mostly due to Baron’s work. Then the rest of the stations got hip to the idea and hired DJs to follow Baron’s lead. This led to the three opening free-style concerts that Baron did in “El Coliseito”. In 1988 there is a free-style explosion, and there emerges the Tribute to Baron entitled “Baron ‘88” done on January 2, 1988 at the “Coliseo Roberto Clemente”. During this tribute, the attendance of approximately 6,000 people was present and patiently waiting to view Baron Lopez spin. Artists such as Judy Torres, La Girls, Fascination and others came to commemorate Baron Lopez. This heightened Baron’s respect for his public and the awareness that he could never defraud his followers.

In 1998, Baron got his introduction to the New York radio market by doing guest spots for Paco’s SUPERMIX. The SUPERMIX was so popular that the station’s programmer asked him to become a regular MEGA MEZCLA DJ.

Baron Lopez is one of those names that come to minds every time one talks about the best remixers in the Latin side of things, old school salsa remixes and great legendary Latin DJs.

Baron is one of today’s most popular and respected DJ’s and remix expert. He was the MEGA MEZCLA DJ for New York’s 1 Latin radio station MEGA 97.9, LATINO MIX Free Style Flashback, and 1 Dance music radio station 103.5 KTU, one of the nation’s most popular radio shows. Programming his special tailored Reggaeton remixes which uniquely transforms popular Hip Hop, Freestyle and Tropical music into unprecedented Reggaeton hits which many DJs constantly search for.

His talent and versatility have made him one of the top DJs in the country and abroad. He regularly spins at many major venues in NYC and the biggest events around the world such as the Winter Music Conference (WMC), and other world renowned tropical festivals.

Baron was responsible for the critically acclaimed and popular Salsa and Reggaeton remixes released by Combo Records featuring some of the hottest “El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico” classic hits. Baron has utilized his experience and skills as a great club DJ implementing them in every remix he realizes.

Producer

Baron Lopez then introduces himself to TV and works in the program “PartyTime” for WAPA TV and “Alto Voltage” on Telemundo P.R.

Prime Records then brings Baron on-board as Producer and A&R for their Record Label. Baron is hired to produce Vico C’s “Hispanic Soul”, “Explocion (full cd)”, “Vico C Gold” among other.

Lopez has devoted most of his time to producing works with the biggest names in the industry. The list of artist’s include such greats as: Vico C, Tito Rojas, Fransheska, DLG, Jerry Rivera, Band Loca, Tono Rosario, Nino Segarra, and Wilfredo Vargas.

In 2006, he began producing songs for K7. Baron was a big asset in reuniting most of the talent and also produced music for the real Reggaeton Documentary Movie from the true beginning of when Spanish Rap evolved into Reggaeton entitled “Straight out of Puerto Rico: Reggaeton - Rough Road to Glory”.

Visionary

Only a visionary as Baron, could concoct such ideas that would deem him unique and creative. As an innovator, Baron was responsible for many firsts such as:

- First DJ to do a Spanish Hip Hop/Rap record before Vico C and Ruben J entitled “Las Drogas Matan” by D. Squad.

- First to remix Salsa.

- First to do 12” Salsa and Merengue remix with six different versions of the same song.

- First DJ to do a Concert/Party that attracted an attendance of such multitude.

- Quoted by DJ Adam (Tego Calderon’s DJ) “Baron Lopez was going to be the first to come out with a Hip Hop Compilation with various artist before Playero and The Noise, but due to disagreements with the Executive Production, the record was never released.”

- First DJ to work simultaneously in two radio stations in Puerto Rico.

Baron Lopez is still young, very meek, talented and very professional. So the future looks very promising for this innovative talent. Be sure to check out his site very well, and definitely make sure you don’t miss the next Baron Lopez Website, Production, or Remix. It will always be an unforgettable experience.

Original name: Sweet Temptation (the name was changed due to pressure from The Temptation's manager). Original line-up: Betty Dee and sisters Margie & Mari Fernandez. Mari left the group soon after their debut album was released and was replaced by Sheila Vega. The album cover was reshot and the album rereleased with Sheila's image. Margie and Sheila then left the group and three new members (Belle, Maya & Jenae) joined briefly for a couple of live shows. Shannon - Let the music play

Shannon is an American singer. She is best known for her 1983 million selling record, "Let the Music Play." The record re-defined the electro funk sound that Arthur Baker and John Rocca (who produced "I.O.U" by Freeez) developed in 1982, which would eventually be called freestyle music.

In the spring of 1983, Greene was enrolled at York College and toured with the New York Jazz Ensemble. Quintin Hicks, an associate of the production team of Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa, later saw Shannon singing with a live band in her cousin's recording studio. Shannon auditioned for Liggett and Barbosa with the song "She Can't Love You Like I Do". They introduced her to the track "Fire and Ice," which would later evolve into Shannon's signature song, "Let the Music Play." This title would also be applied to Shannon's debut album.

In July 1983, the "Let the Music Play" single was released and Shannon was invited back to record more songs with Liggett and Barbosa. "Let the Music Play" had become acknowledged as the first Latin freestyle track. The single reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. It spent six weeks at #1.

Her debut album, Let the Music Play, was released in February 1984. The follow-up single from the album was "Give Me Tonight", which hit the top spot on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. It also became a significant hit on Urban radio. In the U.S., the third single was "My Heart's Divided," another Latin freestyle track, which again featured Jimmi Tunnel on the refrain vocals. "Sweet Somebody," a mid-tempo soul effort, made the Top 40 in Europe.

Let the Music Play went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide. Shannon was nominated for a Grammy and received numerous other awards, including the Dianah Washington (Jack the Rapper) Award, the Hall of Fame Award, the Gold Ampex Reel Award, a certified gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America, and the Best Billboard Top 10 female R&B vocalist.

In 1985, Shannon released her second album, Do You Wanna Get Away, which sported a sound similar to that of her debut album. The title track became her third #1 on the Dance charts and became her third and final chart hit on the Billboard Hot 100 to date. She scored three more dance hits from the album, including "Stronger Together," a cover of "Urgent" by Foreigner, and "Stop the Noise," with a video sponsored by Pepsi and Black Angus. Her third album, 1986's Love Goes All the Way, was not as successful as her previous LPs.

Shannon asked to be released from her recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1987. Earlier that year, she recorded one last single, "Criminal," for the movie Fatal Beauty. While touring the world, Shannon attended and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

In the late 1990s interest in Shannon rekindled, when VH1 spotlighted her on their One Hit Wonders series. Entertainment Tonight also taped a special about her life. In 1998, she co-wrote and sang on the track "Take a Little Time" by Les Rythmes Digitales.

In 2000, Shannon released her fourth studio album, The Best Is Yet to Come, on which she is credited as a co-writer. Chris Barbosa was invited back as a producer, along with Andy "Panda" Tripoli and Tony Moran. A Greatest Hits album was released in November 2004.

On April 20, 2006, Shannon participated in the Freestyle Extranvaganza concert along with Judy Torres, George Lamond, Cynthia, Lisette Melendez, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, the Cover Girls, Hanson and Davis, Coro, and Stevie B.. The event was sponsored by WKTU, WSKQ, and WCAA in New York.

Expose - Exposure

Formed in 1984, Miami-based Exposé (originally X-Posed) was the brainchild of dance music producer Lewis A. Martineé. The all-girl trio consisted of Sandra “Sandee” Casanas, Aléjandra “Alé” Lorenzo and Laurie Miller.

After just two singles, “Exposed To Love” and “Point Of No Return,” both of which became major club hits, Exposé split up. Alé and Sandee embarked on solo careers, and Sandee had great club success with her solo album “Only Time Will Tell”, which included the dance smash “Notice Me”.

When it came time to record a third single, “Come Go With Me” , an entirely new lineup, Ann Curless, Jeanette Jurado and Gioia Bruno, was brought together by Martineé.

The album “Exposure” was released in 1986 and sold over two-million copies and reached the top 20. The album was released with the original versions of Point Of No Return and Exposed To Love, with the vocals of Alé Lorenzo . Martineé chose to re-record and re-release Point Of No Return with the new vocalists, and the song was a hit.

Exposé released a second successful album in 1989, What You Don't Know, and had many more hits. But in 1992 Gioia left the trio due to health reasons. She was replaced by Kelly Moneymaker for a self-titled release later that same year, but the album didn't make much of an impact and the group broke up.

Gioia has since released several solo singles and a solo album, called Expose This.

Apotheosis-O Fortuna

After Rob posted the Apotheosis joint I thought I'd dig this out. I didn't think I had it anymore. I was gonna post up a track that I have found here looong ago. Actually that's how I found Vinyl Vault. My first DL from here. I recently bought the 12" and I'll post it up later if I can. Anyways, Not much I remember when buying this classic single (Apotheosis). I think it was at or around Tower Records in the village, NYC or somewhere in Bleecker Street. No one had the vinyl just CD singles. Anyway, if I remember correctly they had this playing and I remember people nodding their heads to this. Of course I was looking to see what was a hot item for people when in fact that's what you want to play, lol. So I had asked for it and well there you go. I never did like this much. Probably didn't get as much into it, lol. But enjoy! ~MastrChief07

Nairobi - Funky Soul Makossa

A classic electro monster! I remember finding this record in the garbage can in the church that I use to attend to when I was around 8 yrs old, and I was with a couple of my friends from church and i was curious about this record but didn't know what song it was when I heard one of my
friends say, "Oh Shit that funky soul makossa! that song is fresh!"...lol. And I looked at him and said really? well I'm taking it home with me to hear it! He tried to flip the script and said nah that aint that song though...that has some corny mixes on there... I said yeah right! whatever! I took it home with me and when I played it in my parents big wooden stereo with the 8 track player and the record player with 78rpms I fell in love with these electro b-boy beats and made it a keeper in my little pile of albums Menudo, Kiss, & I think I had a Michael Jackson Album. I wasn't thinking of being a dj yet I was still into toys and being outside with my friends playing in the dirt box...lol! Download this banger it's a must!---12inchjunkie

Veronica - Release Me (Let Me Go)

I had to put this up after Rob's Veronica post. I forgot. How could I forget when I listen to this frequently in my iPod and my ride, LOL. I remember first hearing this and first thing I did was jet over to the record shops for this. The Vicious Dub is ill which I totally raise the volume up always. I love this track. It's one of my favorites. Many memories from this single. From dancing my ass off with my best friend (I may have been blitz, lol!) to meeting Veronica and getting her autograph on one of the singles I bought for her to sign. She has some set of vocals man. I remember hearing her last single "The Way He Makes Me Feel". I have the Fricia & Lamboy Mix. If anyone has the full mixes please do tell. Enjoy this slammin' track. Btw, I couldn't find the photo for this release so I had to opt for what was available of course. Anyone has any pics of the labels to add with the pic above I appreciate it. Peace. ~MastrChief07

Stevie B - Party Your Body

Classic Freestyle Record here...Singer, songwriter and producer Stevie B. was among the leading lights of the Miami dance music scene of the late 1980s, later reaching the top of the pop charts with the megahit "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)." A native of South Florida, he worked a variety of dead-end jobs ranging from car wash attendant to fast food server before scoring his debut hit with 1987's "Party Your Body" which grew from a regional success to national club smash; it was also the title track of his 1988 debut LP, which went gold with the huge success 'Spring Love'. With 1989's In My Eyes, Stevie B. launched his first Top 40 hit, "I Wanna Be the One" its follow-up, "Love Me for Life," soon cracked the Top 30. With 1990's "Because I Love You," he reached the pinnacle of his success, with the single's accompanying album Love and Emotion also generating a pair of Top 20 hits, "I'll Be by Your Side" and the title cut. However, with the subsequent rise of alternative rock, Stevie B.'s light dance-pop sound lost much of its mainstream appeal, and he never again recaptured his previous success, with records including 1992's Healing and 1996's Waiting for Your Love appearing to little notice. The Best of Stevie B. followed in 1998

Steel Gray - Do You Want To Dance?

I personally like the "Tyree Mix" the best it's put's you in a good mood hearing the piano's with 808/909 clap, hi-hats open & closed, hard kick & a thick bassline and classic snare rolls "CHICAGO" I also like the "Loftis Mix" something about the vocals I can't put a finger on it still since 1990. Maybe the production helped them out alot on this track, but I like it. I don't think I ever want to hear a acapella for them (lol) ((D. J. International Is Still A Stand Out Label To This Day)) when I see it I have to give it a listen.

Tracklist:
A1. Do You Want To Dance? (Rocky Jones Mix) (5:50)
A2. Do You Want To Dance? (Tyree Mix) (6:04)
B1. Do You Want To Dance? (Loftis Mix) (5:52)
B2. Do You Want To Dance? (Joe Smooth Mix) (5:59)
