Handing out the Beatdowns... It's V103 - Street Beats!

Since my man 12Inch done got me all emotional with his lifechanging mixtape experience c/o Frankie Bones Megamix on Hot97 oldskool style - I figure that's my cue to get up in there with similar lifechanging mixtape experiences... Mine's went down in that same era of urban FM radio dopeness, just a little south from NYC in DC/Baltimore but still East Coast and we had our own twist on hip-hop & house music that you just couldn't find anywhere else in the universe....

I will keep this brief for everybody's sake, so that I don't go overboard and start gushing about how much better everything was in 1992/93 - down here in DC and Bmore, sh*t was outta control! Crack was on the attack, blocks looked like warzones and the DJs here in DC and Bmore had to bring some ammunition to the decks when they stepped up. Sounds corny but there's a handful of tapes I recorded latenight style between 1989 and 1995, that have become so important to me that I treat them like pets or kids or some sh*t. They are so dope, a few of these - that they just speak volumes as to the environment in which they were created.

Even when it was DJs pumping Go-go in DC, or jackin' house and bmore club breaks (which was at its GREATEST back then, in my opinion) - to me it was all very hip-hop, just with our different dialect and way of doin thangs.... Nowadays you turn on the radio and all you get is the predictable rotation of Wack Attacks where once there were Dope Beetz :( It's a shame!

Anyways - the music speaks for itself. "Dope Beats" was recorded in high ghetto fashion, pirate style as you can see from the scan. Don't know who was the DJ (possibly Frank Ski / possibly Boobie or K-Life even) but that dude saying "Handing out the Beatdowns - V103 Street Beats" is priceless. It was a great night to hit Record... Enjoy. The other tape was recorded in similar blunted absentee fashion, but turns out to be DJ Karizma on the decks on what was most likely a Friday or Saturday night - and that tape is just perfection. Gives me chills every time I hear the Karizma joint....

Shouts to all the O.G. Bmore fam who created this sound, and they still hold it down ~! Scottie B, Frank Ski, Boobie, DJ Technics, Karizma, Rod Lee, Griff, K-Swift...
